Elma de Vries, CadoMotus World

How many national titles she won? “No idea”. This is Elma de Vries. Whether it’s ice racing or inline, sprinting or marathon skating, European or National Championships; De Vries always seems to start as one of the big favourites for victory - and she has come through with the goods on countless occasions - her most recent 'big one' being the Gold Medal in the 2007 European Championships 1000m.

Name: Elma E.L.M de Vries
Born: 20-03-1983
Lives: Meppel, the Netherlands
Relationship: No

We've seen you in 2 different uniforms... who are you racing for this summer?
I’m in the CadoMotus team during World Cup races. In the Dutch races I will be wearing my DSB outfit.
So... you'll have to race against girls that you will have to team up with outside Holland?
Yes, but I’m pretty much used to it. It’s the same with the European or Worlds team. The whole season you battle against each other, but wearing the national jersey, it’s the other way around. I think I’m professional enough to cope with it.
You race a lot. Ice and inline, marathon, long track, World Cups... Do you ever get tired?
Almost all Dutch skaters skate 2 seasons in a year, ice marathons in winter and inline racing in summer. The difference is maybe that I also do some long track racing and World Cup racing. But I can’t be at 2 places a time, so in the end, it’s not like I do twice as much races as others do.

But sure, sometimes I get tired. Travelling to the World Cup races is hard. That’s one reason I’m very happy to be in the CadoMotus team. Now I can do the travelling together with them.

Your family is a real skating family. How come?
My mum met my dad. They married, got kids and the kids just wanted to go skating. Granddad arranged the first easy gliders. The cattle dealer brought the first useful ice skates. Mum brought us to the training sessions at the local club, dad sponsored our equipment. We trained together, me, my 2 brothers and my sister. We always had a good atmosphere at the club, which really motivated us. We just like it. I’m not sure it’s something genetically.

Your brother Bob ruled the ice marathon season this year, your little brother Bart made a very positive debut on the ice, and once again you won race after race.

Quite a year... There are some crazy parents in sport - so how do your parents remain so calm and light-hearted?

Yes, our parents always stimulated us to skate. But in a way that they brought us to training sessions and races and made sure we were having the right equipment.

Once we were skating, they just handed it over into the hands of our coaches. “They know what they are talking about”, they must have been thinking. And we are very motivated ourselves. No need for them to scream and yell or whatsoever.
You're rarely seen without your trademark 'Cheshire Cat' grin - why do you love skating as much as you seem to?
It gives me the ultimate feeling of freedom. Being outside, in the sun, working out. Skating is not a real complex movement. It’s a combination of speed, technique and tactics. It’s nice to watch and to do.

Plus that I am that lucky that I’m a pro skater. I can put all my time in it and I see much places all over the World. It became my lifestyle and I’m loving it!
